• Porter eyeing Sunday charge at Castle Hill

Cassie Porter may need to one-up her own joint women’s tournament record as she eyes a Sunday charge at Webex Players Series Sydney.

Out early in Round 3 after posting 2-over 74 in Round 2, Porter plundered two eagles and six birdies in a day’s best round of 9-under 63 on Saturday that rocketed the Queenslander up the leaderboard.

It matched the mark set by Korean LPGA Tour star Jenny Shin in Round 1 last year, but Porter may need to go even lower again to bring the top of the leaderboard into frame.

At 14-under, the LPGA Tour rookie had drawn to within three of Nick Voke’s 36-hole lead as the final group teed off at Castle Hill Country Club on Saturday but will start the final round eight strokes back and in a tie for sixth as Voke set a new 54-hole tournament record of 22-under par.

The 30-year-old Kiwi will start Sunday with a four-stroke advantage from the in-form Jake McLeod (65) with a second New Zealander, Tyler Wood (64), part of a three-way tie for third with Travis Smyth (66) and Jack Munro (67) at 15-under.

Porter knows that if she is to make any kind of impression, another fast start will be key.

“Out here it is so important to have a good front nine,” said Porter, who began Round 2 with an eagle at the par-5 first.

“You can light it up the back nine for sure, but just for confidence-boosting going into the second nine, I think that’s super important out here.

“There’s a lot of opportunities, so if you can take advantage of those at the start, it provides a good base for momentum.”

Back in Australia after missing the cut in her LPGA Tour debut at the Founders Cup, Porter has been top 15 at the Australian Open and Webex Players Series events in Perth and Victoria.

“It’s felt close for a while, but as we all know, this game has so many swings and roundabouts,” she added.

“It’s nice for it to click every now and then.”

Playing in the second-to-last group, outstanding Victorian amateur Jazy Roberts dropped into a share of 17th with a round of 2-over 74, Momoka Kobori’s hopes of taking home the trophy won by her brother, Kazuma, a year ago seemingly fading with a round of 1-over 73.

The final round will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 503 and Kayo with coverage to begin at 1pm AEDT.
