The latest addition to the WPGA Tour of Australasia is adamant that the timing could not be better as Abbie Teasdale prepares for her professional debut at Webex Players Series Perth hosted by Minjee and Min Woo Lee.
One of a host of Royal Fremantle Golf Club members in the field for the start of Round 1 on Thursday, Teasdale turned professional after earning her 2025 Tour card at Qualifying School on the Gold Coast on New Year’s Eve.
The 22-year-old intends to put that card to good use from the get-go, determined to use her intimate knowledge of the golf course to cash in in her very first event.
“Having your first pro event at your home club is great advantage,” said Teasdale, who has been paired with fellow Royal Fremantle members Hayden Hopewell and amateur Zach Capelli for the first two rounds.
“If I can just stick to my gameplan and not over-think things, I’ll have a good chance this week.
“I know this course very well but the key this week will be keeping your speed on the greens because they are the fastest I’ve ever played them!
“Aside from that, it’s just about playing smart, knowing when you need to play safe and attacking when you can. The course isn’t playing that long, so there’ll be lots of birdie chances.”
First coming to prominence by winning the 2018 WA Women’s Amateur Championship at just 15 years of age, Teasdale was a prolific winner at state, national and international level, with notable titles including the WA Women’s Amateur, the Concord Cup and the English Women’s Open Strokeplay in 2023, as well as the English Women’s Amateur Championship and Bowra & O’Dea Women’s Classic in 2022.
Given all that she has accomplished in the amateur game, Teasdale said it was time to test her game as a professional.
“I just feel that I’ve been playing amateur golf for long enough now, so I wanted to take that next step,” she said.
“I’ve been hitting the ball really well recently and I want to start making money from my golf now.
“I think the WPGA Tour will be a great start to my pro career and a place where I can get my confidence up playing against these girls week-in, week-out.
“I’ll need to do well in every event, but if I can do that for the rest of the year it’ll get my confidence up to have a go at Ladies European Tour Qualifying School [in late 2025].”
Round 1 of the Webex Players Series Perth tees off at 7am AWST Thursday and entry is free for spectators all four days.
The final two rounds will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and Kayo from 4pm AEDT Saturday and 2pm AEDT Sunday. - Neal Maidment
