Just three days after being the caddie who helped her partner Jordan Doull capture his first professional win, Kathryn Norris is on the brink of her own breakthrough success at the Drummond Golf Melbourne International.
With their roles reversed – Doull this time on the bag for Norris – the West Australian shot a 1-under-par 71 at Latrobe Golf Club to share the lead with Jordan O’Brien (Queensland) and Liyana Durisic (Malaysia) in the 36-hole WPGA Tour of Australasia event.
It’s been a great summer so far for the Norris-Doull partnership. Jordan was runner-up at the WA PGA Championship before claiming the Webex Players Series Perth tournament in a playoff at Royal Fremantle on Sunday.
Norris, meanwhile, grabbed a share of second at the Webex Players Series South Australia at Willunga.
She said the experience of caddying for Doull in pressure situations on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia had definitely become an asset for her own game.
“I learn from what he does,” she said.
“There’s learnings on the emotional side of the game which obviously I'm still learning myself.
“Watching him miss a green and then get up and down I go, ‘Well, you can still get up down’ when I’m in that situation.
“My body's definitely feeling still a little bit sore from caddying in Perth and there were moments out there where I didn't quite feel like my normal self body-wise.
“I’m just happy to get it done and maybe rest up a little bit tonight.”
The celebrations of Doull’s victory included some champagne on Sunday night but the couple was brought back to earth by a 6am flight on Monday so Norris could get ready for Latrobe.
With five birdies on her card, she was the outright leader before slipping up with a bogey on her final hole, the par-4 third.
“There's a lot of tight driving holes out there, so it is just a tricky course,” Norris said.
“It really doesn't look like it’s that difficult, but you've got to pay attention to it.”
Durisic’s 1-under round came in the morning wave.
After recently gaining her WPGA Tour of Australasia card through the Qualifying School, the graduate of Iowa State University finds herself in the final group in just her second Tour event after missing the cut at Webex Players Series Perth.
O’Brien made a nice run on the back nine with birdies at 12, 16 and 18 in a round that also included three bogeys.
With 18 holes to play on Thursday, 14 players are within two shots of the lead including a group of three – Kristalle Blum (SA), Claire Shin (NSW) and Abbie Teasdale (WA) – at even-par, one back of the frontrunning trio.
The first group in the final round will tee off at 8am Thursday with the leaders starting at 11am.
Entry for spectators is free.
