• Norris learns from mistakes at Webex Players Series

West Australian Kathryn Norris is determined to learn from her mistakes after playing her way into the weekend at the Webex Players Series South Australia hosted by Greg Blewett.

Norris shot 3-under 67 at Willunga Golf Course on Friday to go into Round 3 at 4-under par, five strokes back of Kiwi co-leaders Kerry Mountcastle (63) and Jake Meenhorst (64) who are both 9-under through 36 holes.

The 23-year-old, who hails from Mandurah, could have been within one of the lead if not for messy double-bogeys in each of the opening two rounds, vowing to employ a smarter strategy to make further moves up the leaderboard from her current position of tied for 16th.

One of four WPGA Tour Members to survive the cut that fell at 1-under-par, Norris started with a bogey at the par-4 10th but bounced back with birdies at 11 and 13. She made two at the par-3 16th before dropping two shots at the par-5 17th.

It was a clean card from that point on with birdies at two, three and eight, a blueprint to the tactics she needs to follow for the final two rounds.

“You feel like you should be birdieing most of the holes and then it just gets you every now and then,” Norris said.

“You just so quickly can make a mistake and all of a sudden it bites you.

“Just trying to iron out the mistakes and take my pars when I need to and then cash in on the other holes.

“Definitely into the weekend, just play steady and wait for the opportunities to arise.”

A 50-foot putt for birdie on her second hole of the day was a highlight for Norris, who took confidence from narrowly missing the cut at last week’s Bowra & O’Dea Nexus Advisernet WA Open at her home club.

“It was really great to be able to play some competitive golf,” Norris added.

“We’ve had a big gap from the Pro-Ams until now, so just being able to play some competitive golf last week was really, really cool.

“It helped this week for sure.”

Another WPGA Member familiar with mixing it with the boys on the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series is Danni Vasquez Boyd.

Vasquez Boyd joined a short list of women to win on the Pro-Am Series when she triumphed at Biloela in June, finding herself more and more comfortable on the Webex Players Series circuit.

“I feel like playing the Pro-Ams was a good preparation for me to come into these tour events,” said Vasquez Boyd, who eagled the par-5 fourth in her round of 2-under 68 to be 3-under.

“Definitely in the last few months it definitely has changed in terms of my mental game, just being a little easier on myself.

“I know that I’ve put in the hard work and I just need to go out there and let it happen.

“Previously, I’ve always tried to force it. So that definitely helped this week, being my first tour event back in a while.”

The other WPGA players to make the cut were New Zealand’s Hanee Song (68) and Coffs Harbour’s Amelia Mehmet-Grohn (69), who birdied two of her final three holes to make the cut on the number.
