Swede Madeleine Sagstrom and Korean Haeji Kang were forced to share the spoils today after round one of the ISPS Handa Vic Open, after both players shot superb opening rounds of 8-under par 65.

Sagstrom is looking for her second win in as many starts in 2020, the Swede broke through for her first LPGA win at the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio in Florida two weeks ago and again finds herself sitting at the top of the leaderboard. The 27-year-old, from Uppsala in Sweden, has long been touted as a potential superstar of the future, and now that she has that first professional victory tucked away it would be no surprise to see the floodgates open for her.

Haeji Kang meanwhile is no stranger to the ISPS Handa Vic Open, having competed in the very first combined men`s and women`s Vic Open back in 2012. Kang holed out on the final hole of that tournament to get into a playoff, before eventually losing out to Frenchwoman Joanna Klatten. The  11-year LPGA veteran has had a disappointing last three years in the US, but has proven on multiple occasions she has the talent to shoot low scores.

Of the Australians competing this week, NSW amateur Steph Kyriacou upstaged her more credentialled compatriots shooting a 5-under par 68, while Minjee Lee, Hannah Green and Paige Stubbs were the best of the Australian professionals all sitting at 3-under -par.

The conditions at 13th Beach today were benign compared to those the players had practiced in earlier in the week, and the scores reflected the perfect scoring conditions. In the women`s field 91 players finished on even par or better, while in the men’s field that number was 117.

Tomorrow’s second round will start at 7:00 am.
