Englishwoman Felicity Johnson and Cook Islands native Elmay Viking both shot superb 5-under-par rounds of 67 to share the lead at the halfway mark of the Ballarat Icons Pro-am at Ballarat Golf Club today.
Playing in the morning wave, Viking made 4 birdies and an eagle on route to her 67, the only slip-up of the day coming at the difficult par 3 11th hole where she made a bogey. The 25-year old has been in solid form in the 2020 ALPG ClubCar Series, finishing in a tie for 5th place at the ALPG Windaroo Lakes Pro-am, along with a tie for 2nd a week ago at the Findex Yamba Pro-am.
Johnson, winner of the 2009 Tenerife Ladies Open on the Ladies European Tour, is a frequent visitor to Australian shores and has made no secret of her love for the Australian way of life. The 32-year-old started her round this afternoon with a bogey, but bounced back with 6 birdies in her final 17 holes, four of them coming on the par fives.
After a stint on the US LPGA Tour Johnson, known as one of the best ball-strikers in the womens game, will focus her energy on the Ladies European Tour in 2020. The Birmingham native has the class to win any week she tees it up if her long term nemesis, the putter, behaves.
Just one shot behind the leaders is Mexican star Alejandra Llaneza who shot a 4-under-par 68, with four players, Steph Na, Kim Kaufman, Dottie Ardina and Kylie Henry a further shot back sitting at 3-under-par.
The second round will tee off from 7:00 am tomorrow morning, spectators are welcome and entry is free.
