Japanese player Ayaka Sugihara set the Windaroo Lakes course on fire this afternoon, firing 7 birdies on route to a 6-under par round of 67 and will take a 1-shot lead into tomorrow`s 2nd round.
Sugihara teed off this afternoon from the 1st tee and started solidly making pars at each of her first 2 holes, before unleashing with birdies at the 3rd, 6th and 7th holes to make the turn in 3-under par. Sugihara`s only blemish of the day came at the long
par-4 10th hole, but the 21-year-old bounced back with a birdie at the 12th before finishng in style with back to back birdies at 17 and 18.
Philippine star Dottie Ardina sits alone in 2nd place after shooting a flawless 5 under par round of 68, with South Australian Soo Jin Lee and Scot Gemma Dryburgh, who made the turn in style after holing out her second shot at the par four ninth hole for an eagle, tied in 3rd place at 3-under.
Lee, who also went bogey free this afternoon was the leading Australian after day one, other notables were Robyn Choi who shot a 1-under par 72, as did Sydney`s Paige Stubbs, West Australian Hira Naveed and Quennslander Katelyn Must.
Gold Coast favourite Becky Kay has some ground to make up in the final 2 rounds after shooting an opening 77.
The 74 players competing this week are playing for exemptions into all of the events on the ALPG Tour in 2020. The leading seven players who are not otherwise exempt will get to compete in the ISPS Handa Vic Open, three exemptions are available for those not otherwise exempt into the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open, and a minimum of fifteen spots are available for those who are not otherwise exempt into the Australian Ladies Classic Bonville and the Women’s NSW Open.
In addition, the leading 35 players who are not otherwise exempt will gain exemptions into the ALPG Windaroo Lakes Pro-am, The Findex Yamba Golf Club Pro-am, the Aoyuan International Moss Vale Pro-am and the Ballarat Icons pro-am.
Round 2 will get underway at 11:am Monday 20th January at Windaroo Lakes Golf Club, Anna Louise Terrace, Windaroo QLD 4207.
Entry is free for all and spectators are most welcome.
Windaroo Lakes Golf Club is just a 30 minutes drive south of Brisbane and 40 minutes north of the Gold Coast.
