Chinese star Zhang Weiwei shot a final round 3-under-par 69 to take out the 2019 Thailand LPGA Masters in style at Panya Indra Golf Club in Bangkok today.
The 22-year old from Hainan Island in China, started the final round with a two shot lead over Thai player Patcharajutar Kongkraphan, and could not have wished to get off to a better start making an eagle at the par 5 first hole to open up a 3 shot lead after Kongkraphan had also started strongly with a birdie.
After Kongkraphan made a bogey at the 3rd hole the margin was increased to four shots, however Zhang, bidding this week to become the first player in the history of the China LPGA Tour to win four events in one season, also dropped a shot at the par 3 4th hole before bouncing back in spectacular fashion, with a birdie at the 5th and another eagle at the 6th hole to open up a five shot lead.
Meanwhile, Zhang’s Chinese compatriot 17-year-old Mohan Du was also making a climb up the leaderboard, making the turn in 2-under par 34 to get within 6 shots of her compatriot with 9 holes to play.
Kongkraphan did make a late charge in an attempt to catch Zhang, making birdies at 14,15 and 17 to shoot a final round 69 to finish in second place at -10, but the highly touted youngster Zhang made no mistakes and cruised home in level par on the back 9 for a two-shot victory.
Du also mounted a late challenge of her own with birdies at the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to shoot the low round of the day, a superb 6-under-par 67, and finished alone in third place at -9.
Of the ALPG members in the field this week, Kiwi Hanee Song was the best of the ten ALPG players to make it through to the final round, shooting an impressive final round 3-under-par 69 to finish at 4-under-par in a tie for 6th place.
