• Chinese star Zhang sizzles at Trust Golf Thai Masters

Chinese star Zhang Weiwei has seized the opening round lead at the Trust Golf Thailand LPGA Masters today at Panya Indra Golf Club in Bangkok, after shooting a superb 7 under par 65.

The 22-year-old, who came into the tournament brimming with confidence after a seven shot win last week at the Hangzhou International Championship on the China LPGA Tour, will take a three shot lead into tomorrow’s second round.

Zhang, from Hainan Island in China, played in this mornings’ wave teeing off from the 10th hole in near perfect scoring conditions, and started solidly with five straight pars.
The youngster then exploded into action, playing her next 10 holes in 7 under par, making birdies at the 15th, 17th, 18th, 1st, and and 3rd holes, an eagle at the par 5 5th hole mixed in with her only bogey of the day at the par 4 2nd hole.

Zhang finished solidly with 3 straight pars and was clearly delighted that her fine form in recent weeks continued this week. In her last 8 events on the China LPGA Tour Zhang boasts three wins, three runner-up finishes and one third place finish, her worst finish being a tie for 6th place.

Trailling Zhang by 3 shots after 4-uner-par rounds of 68 are the Thai duo of Mookharin Ladgratok and Kultida Pramphun.

Of the ALPG members in the field this week Aussie Nadine White, Germany’s Leticia Ras Anderica and Kiwi Hanee Song are the best placed at even par currently in a tie for 20th place.

Following Thursday’s second round there will be a cut to the leading 50 professional players plus ties who will play the final round on Friday.
