• Flic Johnson takes ISPS Handa Vic Open lead after opening 65

Englishwoman Felicity Johnson will take a two-shot lead into tomorrow`s second round of the ISPS Handa Vic Open, after shooting a flawless 8 under par 65 today at 13th Beach Golf Links in Barwon Heads today.

Johnson played today on the Creek course in this afternoon`s wave and was quickly into her stride with birdies on the 10th and 11th holes, her first two holes of the day. Further birdies at the 14th and 15th holes saw the 31-year-old make the turn in 33, 4-under par.

Johnson, who hails from Birmingham in England, kept her foot firmly on the accelerator on her back nine, making birdies at the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 7th holes, eventually signing for a 65.

\"Eight under, it`s pretty good. To do it bogey-free is a bonus, I`m going to sound a bit cocky, but it was really easy. I hit 17 greens in regulation, birdied three of the par-5s, so there`s kind of a couple of almost gimme birdies.\"

Johnson is renowned for her ball striking and would be the first to admit that at times it has been the short stick which has let her down but that was not the case today,
“And for me, if I roll the ball on the greens well, I`ll shoot a good score and that`s what I did today.”

When asked if the Creek course was her favourite of the two courses at 13th Beach Johnson responded,

“To be honest, I`ve played pretty rubbish on both of (the courses here) previously, so it`s a shock to shoot eight under. The Creek was playing pretty scorable today. The winds didn`t really pick up. After a bit of rain overnight, the greens were holding, they were running pretty good. Hopefully, the Beach will treat me kindly tomorrow.”

Her score late in the day eclipsed long-time leader Su Oh, while Canadian Anne-Catherine Tanguay and American Kim Kaufman later joined the Melburnian at six under par.

Oh was the instigator of the low morning scores which included a spectacular hole-in-one from 149m with a six-iron on the Creek Course 15th hole, the sixth of her round.
