Gold Coast native Robyn Choi shot a superb 6 under par round 66 today to take a 2-shot lead into tomorrow`s second and final round of the 2019 Ballarat Icons ALPG Pro-am at Ballarat Golf Club in Victoria.
Playing in the hot and breezy afternoon wave, Choi teed off from the 10th hole and did not get off to the greatest start making a disappointing opening bogey at the 410m par 5. The 19-year-old, who recently turned professional after securing her US LPGA Tour card at the final qualifying tournament in November, bounced back from her start to make birdies at the 13th and 14th holes to make the turn in 1-under par 35.
Further birdies at the par 5 2nd hole and the short par 4 3rd hole saw Choi move to 3 under par for her round, before a superb eagle three at the 455-metre par 5 7th hole followed by another birdie at her finishing hole, the tricky par 4 9th hole saw her signing for a 66.
Alone in 2nd place is Englishwoman Hannah Burke, after shooting a 4-under par 68 in the slightly more benign morning conditions. A further shot back at 3 under par is former Vic Open champion Marianne Skarpnord, and German star Leticia Ras Anderica. The leading Australian at the half-way mark is New South Welshwoman Rebecca Artis, who shot a 2-under par round of 70 to sit in a tie for 6th place. In all 14 players broke par in the testing conditions.
Star attraction Dame Laura Davies did not have her best day at the office but will not be too concerned having flown in from England just yesterday after a long layoff. Davies will play tomorrow alongside local teaching professional Angela Tatt and Kiwi Liv Cheng at 8:30 am, with the group sure to have a vocal gallery supporting them
The title of the pro-am, the ALPG Ballarat Icons Pro-am reflects the group of local iconic Ballarat businesses who collectively are the title sponsors including Gull and Company Estate Agents, JG King Homes and Integra.
