Karrie Webb, 41 times a winner on the LPGA Tour will once again play a limited schedule in 2019, but still has unchecked goals on the golf course and would love to add The Grange Golf Club to the list of courses at which she’s won her national championship.

The Queenslander showed flashes of brilliance with a seven-under-par 65 in Friday’s second round of last week`s ISPS Handa Vic Open, but failed to back up that form in the atrocious conditions in Saturday`s third round.

Webb was in a confident mood when she faced the media this afternoon and said that she felt her form in round two last week was not that far away from her glory years in the 90`s and early 2000`s.

“It was pretty close. Not just because of the score I shot, but I thought clearly,” Webb said.

“I asked the right questions for getting the information I needed from Darren, my caddie.  And then I actually executed the shots that I said I was going to.  And then I made some putts as well. 

“For me it`s not the physical part of it that I struggle with, it`s the mental part of it.  And that day the game just – it wasn`t an easy day, it was quite windy in the afternoon – but the game just sort of came to me naturally.

“My mind was very quiet and my decision making was really good.

“And then because of that, I was able to execute what I needed to.”

Webb said that if she couldn’t be the one to break Australia’s four-year drought dating back to her win at Victoria in 2014, she’d love a compatriot to do so this week.

“I would rather see an Australian flag at the top of the leaderboard than any other flag,” she said with a broad smile.

Of the Australian contingent, Minjee Lee, the world No.7, appears the most likely.

For her part, the Perth youngster is aware of the Australian public’s hopes, but won’t let it affect her mindset.

“I`m not sure if you want to call it a burden, but obviously there`s some expectation there, and obviously I want to play well, because it`s my country`s Open,” she said.

“So, yeah, probably more expectation on myself more than anything.”

Lee’s putter led her astray at the Vic Open, but she’s confident a couple of good early putts tomorrow will turn that around in a hurry.

“I think I’ve just got to see some of the putts roll in the hole. I really didn`t hole anything last week … it was a little bit windy and the conditions were tough, but hopefully I can get something going on the first couple days and it will be better.”

Round 1 action will get underway tomorrow at 7:00am at The Grange Golf Club.
