The Australian Ladies Professional Golf (ALPG) Association, in partnership with title sponsor ActewAGL and Royal Canberra Golf Club yesterday announced that the ActewAGL Canberra Classic will be once again returning to The Royal Canberra Golf Club from the 1st - 3rd March 2019.
The tournament will be an official event on the ALPG Tour schedule with prize money a minimum of $150,000 and will be held the week in between the Australian Ladies Classic Bonville and the NSW Women’s Open.
ALPG CEO Karen Lunn was delighted with the announcement,
“ALPG is delighted to announce the ActewAGL Canberra Classic will once again be featuring on our ALPG Tour schedule in 2019. The 2018 edition of the tournament, which was played earlier this year on the recently redesigned Royal Canberra Golf Club layout was a huge success and we hope to build on that success in 2019” said Ms Lunn.
“Canberra is known for supporting women in sport and also major sporting events, and I could not think of a better place to play this tournament.”
“I would like to say a huge thank you to ActewAGL for their continued support as our title sponsor, without the vision and commitment of this local business the tournament would not be happening.”
“In terms of the tournament venue we could not ask for more, Royal Canberra Golf Club is one of the finest and most picturesque courses in Australia, and the new layout will once again provide a great test for the women professional players.”
“The continued support we have received from Royal Canberra General Manager, Andrew Casey and his team, along with that of the board and the members has been absolutely fantastic. We are honoured that the members want to share their course and facilities with us, and we are excited to be able to showcase it to the world through our live streaming of the final round.
“We are also delighted to have on board Drummond Golf as a gold sponsor and Audi Centre Canberra as our Official Car Partner.”
Dame Laura Davies, former world number one, twice winner of the Australian Open and winner of 85 professional tournaments worldwide including 5 major championship has already indicated that she will return to compete in the event,
“We are delighted that Laura will be returning to Canberra in 2019. She has had a great season in 2018 winning the US Senior Women’s Open and finishing 2nd at the Founders Cup on the LPGA Tour.
In the coming weeks and months, we hope to make some more exciting player announcements, and we are extremely confident that once again we can attract a high-class international field who will no doubt put on another great show. The tournament will again be sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour and given 2019 is a Solheim Cup year we can expect to see many of Europe’s leading players competing as they chase a place on the European team.” concluded Ms Lunn.
ActewAGL Chief Executive Officer Michael Costello said “ActewAGL is a proud supporter of women’s sport and is delighted to be the major sponsor for the 2019 ActewAGL Canberra Classic. We look forward to bringing some of the world’s best female golfers to the ACT, and to showcase our wonderful region to a national and international audience”
Royal Canberra General Manager Andrew Casey said “Royal Canberra Golf Club is delighted once again to be the host venue for the ActewAGL Canberra Classic in 2019. The redevelopment of the course has been received exceptionally well by our members and we are proud to have re-entered the top 20 in Australia. I am sure that the players will find the course both challenging and enjoyable. We look forward to welcoming some of the world’s best golfers to Royal Canberra in March next year”
