Play is underway on day one of the Qantas Golf Club Gold Coast Challenge at Links Hope Island, and after days of rain the sun is finally shining.
The unique pro-am format, whereby the male and female professionals play together in the same group is a first for professional golf in Australia, with each of the men’s and women’s fields competing for $30,000 prizemoney on offer.
Felicity Johnson will start as one of the favourites for the women’s event having taken out the Brisbane Invitational at McLeod Country Golf Club on Friday, and the Englishwoman is also in a strong position to take out the $6500 bonus cheque for the winner of the 2018 ALPG ClubCar Series which will be decided after this event.
Chinese star Xiyu Lin currently leads the standings but is not competing this week. Canadian Kyla Inaba, who won the BWAC Yamba pro-am currently sits in second place 157 points behind Lin and would need to finish no worse than 4th to pass her, while Johnson sits in third place needing a similar result.
Australian star Sarah Kemp needs a top three result to go past Lin, while Manon De Roey, Breanna Gill, Hanee Song and Michele Thomson all need to win the event to have any chance of taking out the ClubCar Series.
The leading 5 players in the ClubCar Series will all receive a bonus, second place will pocket an extra $3500, third place $2500, fourth place $1500 and fifth place $1000.
