Phillis Meti has won the Women`s World Long Drive Championships in Oklahoma for the second time in her career and in dramatic fashion.
The Aucklander was on the back foot for the entire final as pressure started building before her final drive of the day soared 310 yards (into a strong wind) to win in style and even to her the surprise.
\"I`m pretty stoked and super surprised as I didn`t think I had it in me,\" said an excited Meti.
Her emotions were hard to hide, when she hit the final shot as she saved her best till last where celebrations soon followed.
\"How ridiculous was my celebration and falling overlooked so silly,\" she laughed.
\"I hadn`t hit it that long all day and I was just hustling to the very last shot where I then hit the best ball of the whole division which was extremely pleasing.\"
With a club head speed of 119mph when the average golfer on the PGA Tour swings it 112mph and Jordan Spieth swinging at 117mph, the 29-year-old has made a name for herself and has also taken home $12,000 USD for her efforts.
Phillis won this event back in 2006 with a drive of 326 yards and was runner-up in 2007 and 2008 where on this occasion she happened to lose on the final ball of the day which made this win even more rewarding. It has clearly been a long time between victories for the 29-year-old as she decided to concentrate on her playing career, but this is her first win as a professional after taking the plunge to the top level in 2009.
This victory was all the more special as she dedicated the win to her number one supporter and late father who sadly passed away last year.
\"This was hugely special to me as my Dad passed away and this kept me at home, away from the game because I wanted to spend as much time with the family as I could.\"
The humble Kiwi won`t be changing anything after her famous victory as she returns to work on Monday as per usual.
Metis next event is the Anita Boon Pro-Am in New Zealand where she will test herself against some of Australasia`s best golfing talents.
