Latvia’s Laura Jansone emerged as the winner of the GoldKey Financial ALPG Pro-am at Pennant Hills Golf Club today, after round 2 was cancelled due to heavy rain during the afternoon.
Jansone was one of 38 players who had to come back to finish their round this morning after thunderstorms forced round one play to be suspended yesterday afternoon, and sizzled on her homeward nine to shoot a 7 under par round of 66. Mexico’s Ana Menendez, another player who finished her round this morning was just one shot off the pace after a 6 under par round of 67.
Overnight leaders Queenslanders Bree Arthur and Tamara Johns were relegated to 3rd placed when play resumed in the afternoon shotgun start at 1pm.
Things were looking promising at the start of play as the rain eased after several thunderstorms skirted around Pennant Hills GC, however at 4:15pm and after 2 hours of heavy rain play was suspended due to several greens being flooded.
At 5pm with rain still falling the decision was made to cancel round two which meant that the results from the first round would stand.
Jansone considered herself fortunate considering the circumstances but was obviously delighted with the win, which was her first professional victory after three years competing on the Ladies European Tour. “I love Australia, my best ever tour finish came at the RACV Ladies Masters last year and I really enjoy playing here” said the 27 year old Latvian
“ I haven’t played that well the last two events but I have really been working hard on my mental game, after each round sitting a thinking what I could do better and it really worked here at Pennant Hills. I really have to thank my family and my coach who have given me amazing support, this is my lowest round as a professional and I couldn’t be happier,”
