Karrie Webb made a strong start at the KMPG Women`s PGA Championship in the bid to win her eighth major championship title. With a 5-under-par 68, Webb moved into a tie for third after Thursday`s first round at Westchester Country Club to be two shots back of leader Jenny Shin.
Webb is seeking her first major championship since winning the Kraft Nabisco nine years ago. She hasn’t lost the winning habit, though. She won a pair of LPGA titles last year including the ISPS Handa Women`s Australian Open, the 40th and 41st wins of her LPGA career.
With 18-year-old New Zealander Lydia Ko No. 1 in the Rolex Rankings, and Minjee Lee already with her first LPGA victory under her belt Webb finds herself being asked a lot about competing against so many young challengers. Webb turned 40 late last year. She was asked after Thursday’s round how rewarding winning continues to be.
“That`s why I`m still out here,” she said. “If I didn`t think that I could, I wouldn`t even be trying. But I definitely think my game is as good as it`s ever been. It`s just a matter of getting out of my own way and allowing that to happen. I did that for the most part today. That’s probably what I`m most proud of.”
If Webb wins her eighth major, she moves into sixth place with Betsy Rawls on the all-time women’s major championship victory list. Patty Berg holds the women’s record with 15 major titles.
Of the other Australians in the field Minjee Lee shot an opening 72, Sarah Kemp 74, Katherine Kirk 75 and Sarah Jane Smith 77.
