Karrie Webb’s opening round of five-under-par 67 sees her just two off the lead at the Kia Classic in California.
Second-year Tour member and two-time LPGA winner Mirim Lee leads a packed leaderboard after she posted a bogey-free 65 at Aviara Golf Club. 15-time LPGA Tour winner Yani Tseng (66) trails Lee by one shot in solo second and is looking to break back into the winner circle for the first time since the 2012 Kia Classic.
Webb round got off to the perfect start with a birdie, she then parred the next six holes before she rattled of three consecutive birdies from the 8th hole. Another birdie on the 13th saw her sign for a 67. Webb shares third place with American Cristie Kerr, Rolex World No.1 Lydia Ko, and China’s Xiyu Lin. 10 players share seventh and only three shots back including Americans Stacy Lewis and Lexi Thompson.
NSW Sarah Kemp is the next best Aussie, she is at one-under-par and in a tie for 49th position. Rookie Minjee Lee and Sarah Jane Smith are both at one-over-par and tied for 92nd. Katherine Kirk is a further shot back and tied for 109th.
The second round is live on Fox Sports, channel 504 at 9am Saturday morning.
