Rachel Hetherington will swap her golf shoes for dancing heels when she takes to the floor in the Tweed Shire Celebrity Dance for Cancer event to raise a minimum of $3,000 for the Cancer Council on Saturday 16 August 2014 at Tweed Heads Civic Centre.
Rachel will perform a Latin Jive routine with her instructor, local Peter Leroy, who has 20 years of competitive dancing experience and is the Principal instructor of Latin Dance Fever.
Golf and dancing have a few things in common, says Rachel. “I found with both my golf game and my dancing I’ve needed patience, balance and also a good instructor, which I’m very lucky to have.â€
“My husband Greg and I took some dancing lessons leading up to our wedding in 2009. I do really like dancing and I’m enjoying learning it again,†she said.
“I am also looking forward to raising money for the cause and having a great time, but the dancing itself I’m pretty nervous about!â€
According to organisers, there will be a variety of awards announced on the night, including people’s choice, most technical, best slip-up recovery and most cheesy smile.
“I’m hoping I don’t win the best slip-up recovery!†Rachel jested. “It’s probably the first time I haven’t wanted to win an award, but hopefully I can win the most funds raised and the best performance - says my competitive side coming out!â€
The event is being organised by one of Rachel’s customers at the Rachel Hetherington Golf Range. Rachel’s mother is a breast cancer survivor and her cousin recently passed away from cancer.
“We have a lot of customers whose lives have been touched by cancer, so for me I’m happy to raise some money and learn to dance at the same time,†she said.
Tickets are available to join in the night of the laughs and entertainment at the Tweed Shire Celebrity Dance for Cancer. Organisers will hold an auction and raffle on the night.
