Norway’s Suzann Pettersen survived a spirited challenge from Spain’s Azahara Munoz to capture her fourth LPGA title this season the Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship.
Pettersen defended her title by firing a final round of three-under-par 69 at the Sunrise Golf and Country Club to finish at nine-under and five shots clear of Munoz. It wasn’t an easy win, Munoz got out of the blocks with three birdies in the opening nine holes. At the turn the Spaniard was only one stroke back and a birdie on the 12th saw them tied for the lead with six to play.
However, the 13th hole proved to be a pivotal hole, the Rolex Ranked World No. 2 Pettersen birdied it, while Munoz lost carded a bogey. Pettersen went on to birdie the next and finish in style with another on the final hole.
It was the 32 year old 14th career victory and the $US300,000 winner cheque took her season earnings across the US$2million mark.
Swede Caroline Hedwall finished outright third at two-under-par, with South Korean Eun-Hee Ji was the only other player to finish under par and outright fourth.
For the Australians it was a solid week. Katherine Hull-Kirk finished in a tie for 26th at seven-over after a closing round of 75. Lindsey Wright also carded a 75 to finish at nine-over-par and in a share of 35th position. Sarah Jane Smith was the final Australian in the field this week. Smith finished outright 52nd at 14-over after a 76.
