Kirk In Contention
Hee Young Park was the clubhouse leader at eight-under-par when play was suspended due to darkness at the Kingsmill Championship presented by JTBC being played in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Play was suspended at approximately 7:58 p.m. EST with players finishing the hole they were on. The round was delayed by 3.5 hours due to weather (rain) and course conditions this morning with play beginning at 11:00 a.m. EST and the final group teeing off at 6:01 p.m. EST. Play will resume at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning with 24 groups still out on the course.
The South Korean followed her first round of 66 with a three-under-par 68 to sit atop of the leaderboard and one shot over five players including Stacy Lewis (65) and Brittany Lang (68) who completed their second rounds. Two other Americans Lewis Thompson and Lizette Salas and first round leader Azahara Munoz are still out on course.
Park round included four birdies and one bogey. After her round she attributed resting as one of the reasons for her form this week, “I feel really good. Last week I rested like the whole week, so I can I think focus more on the course and I’m ready,†Park said.
Queensland’s Katherine Kirk is continuing her good form of late and sits just three back at five-under-par after rounds of 69 and 68. She shares seventh position with Colombian Mariajo Uribe and Thailand’s Thidapa Suwannapura, two other players are still out on course.
After her round Kirk was asked what she has to do over the week-end to keep the momentum going,
“Just keep doing what I’m doing, I’m swinging it pretty well right now and I’m stroking it well, so just giving myself chances and hope that the
putts drop.†She responded.
So far it is turning out to be a good week for the Australian contingent. Kirk leads the way, however all of the Australians are in a good position to make the cut. Sarah Jane Smith is still on course, she is currently tied for 25th at two-under with four holes to play.
Sarah Kemp is in the clubhouse at one-under par, while Stacey Keating is a shot further back with Karrie Webb at even par and both finished their rounds. An eagle on the par 4 4th hole (her 13th for the day) and a birdie on the 6th has seen the Victorian finished at one-over-par.
The cut is currently at one-over-par. Julia Boland is currently at three-over but she is only half way through her second round.
The defending champion this week is Cristie Kerr, she is in a very good position at four-under-par.
