World number 40, Caroline Hedwall fired a blistering 7 under par 65 to claim the Mount Broughton Classic presented by McGill Transport today.

The star Swede added to her first round 67 to finish at 12 under par and four clear of the in form Emma De Groot whose rounds of 66, & 70 left her alone in second place, a shot ahead of rookie Whitney Hillier.

Hedwall has a growing affinity with Australia and the ALPG tour events, having claimed her first professional victory, in her first event as a professional, when she won the 2011 Bing Lee Samsung Women’s New South Wales Open. From there she went on to win four times on the Ladies European Tour and claim both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honours, before representing Europe in the victorious Solheim Cup team which defeated the USA late in 2011.

“I love coming down to Australia to play. This is my first time to play in the ALPG Tour Pro-Ams and I loved this week (competing in two events) The Pro-am format is good for me because my playing partners are relaxed and I play well in a relaxed atmosphere.” said Hedwall who flew in to Australia with her twin sister Jacqueline, last Wednesday to join the ALPG Tour event at Antill Park. “This is my second win in Australia and gives me great confidence heading into next week’s event (the Bing Lee Samsung Women’s NSW Open)

The powerful Swede showed her class today charging home with a 5 under par back nine which included birdies at the 13th, 16th & 18th holes together with an eagle at the par 5 15th. “The eagle was the highlight. It hit a 3 wood off the tee and then a hybrid through the green and chipped that in for the three. That got great momentum going. I then birdied the last two holes. “

De Groot continues to impress, posting her fourth consecutive sub par round, adding this runner-up finish to her 3rd and 1st places in the past two events. She leads the ALPG Tour Order of Merit and has all but guaranteed herself of starts in the upcoming three major co-sanctioned tournaments, a goal she set herself at the start of the season.

Perth’s Whitney Hillier also posted another top finish, the rookie shooting rounds of 67, 70 to be outright 3rd with Frenchwoman Joanne Klatten a further shot back.

Players now head to Sydney for next week’s Bing Lee Samsung Women’s NSW Open after which the final twenty qualifier spots will be determined for the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters and ISPS Handa Women’s New Zealand Open Championships.
