ALPG Honorary Member Laura Davies has won in her first appearance on the Legends Tour – the official Senior Tour of the LPGA – claiming the Tour’s only major, the ISPS Handa Legends Tour Open Championship.
Played at Innisbrook golf course in Florida, the field was promoted as the strongest tournament lineup in the history of the Legends Tour with names such as Nancy Lopez, Patty Sheehan, Pat Bradley, Jan Stephenson, Meg Mallon, Joanne Carner, Rosie Jones, Sherri Steinhauer and Betsy King vying for the prestigious title
Davies, the English great, now a winner of 82 tournaments worldwide, fired rounds of 70, 71 for a 5 under par total and a two shot victory over Americans, Hall of Famer Beth Daniel and Barb Moxness.
\"I played solid,\" said Davies, \"It`s a tight golf course and I wasn`t expecting to do well but as it turns out I controlled my game, hit a lot of irons and it worked out. The Legends Tour put on a great event and I thoroughly enjoyed the week,\" she added. \"I will definitely be back.\"
Aussies Jane Crafter and Jan Stephenson also teed it up in the over 45’s championship and featured well in the final results. Crafter posted 72,73 for a 1 under total and a tie for 4th place with Americans Rosie Jones and defending champion Michele Redman, whilst Stephenson, an ALPG Life Member, registered a pair of 74’s for a tied 11th result.
